Community Stewards

As AmeriCorps*VISTAs, Community Stewards serve nonprofits by building long-term organizational capacity to alleviate the root causes of poverty.

Recognizing the connection between healthy ecosystems and healthy economies, Community Stewards work with sponsoring organizations to create projects that increase community resiliency by strengthening local food and water resources, environmental remediation and preservation strategies, and local economic development opportunities that celebrate natural resources, history, and culture. This carries forward a legacy of addressing poverty through environmental stewardship that started with the Appalachian Coal Country Watershed Team in 2002 and the Western Hardrock Watershed Team in 2008.

Supported by Stewards Individual Placement Program, Community Stewards are placed for year-long service terms as AmeriCorps*VISTAs, or for 8-10 weeks as VISTA Summer Associates, with nonprofit organizations who serve low-income communities throughout the United States. Each Community Stewards project has an individualized Project Plan which is developed by the host site and Community Stewards staff prior to the placement of the AmeriCorps*VISTA. Project Plans typically cover a three-year service period with VISTAs serving one-year terms.
